Luminosity masking is something I’ve been wanting to add to my repertoire and this helps demystify it a bit.

Hey Mark! I suppose you could ask that of just about any adjustment in the develop module. It all depends on your approach I think. Sometimes I try and get the image as close to “done” as possible in Develop before adding a few finishing touches in Effects. Other times, I just try and create a flat, well exposed image in Develop and then go crazy in Effects. It just depends on my mood really. There are certain things that I don’t mind adding globally to an image, and contrast is one of those things, especially when done minimally. Hope that makes sense, cheers!

It’s always helpful to have a work-along image! This image reminded me of my trip to Death Valley a couple years ago. It’s an awesome experience.

An excellent description of the thought processes you applied, and the mechanics of how to implement them, for someone new to ON1 I hope to take some photos in Bouddi National Park (just north of Sydney) in a couple of weeks and look forward to looking at the raw images with a more critical eye, to develop better images for distribution.
