Filming a reference card can be desirable to ensure proper WB as well as to provide color integrity while making adjustments. They are useful where critical adjustments are necessary though I use them less frequently given the improvements in camera technology. The OP was inquiring about making specific profiles for given cameras and while PR has this capability, I find that the commercial profiles are better than anything I can create with the X-rite colorchecker camera calibration program. Perhaps, Nathan or someone from On1 will jump in and describe the method they create the profiles for PR?

(I don’t shoot portraits), But, I do know a portrait shooter, who uses a colour check card, on every shoot. Because he often has to shoot on location and/or with borrowed lights. And, there are such a wide variety of flourescent, LED, Sodium, etc, that the lighting that he has to work with, can be very unpredictable. And, it is easier to correct the colours, if you set up the camwera white balance first. And a photo of the colour check card, gives a nice fall back/safety position, if everything is going wrong.

But, for landscapes, and other more general photography, in natural light. My camera is always on the daylight setting.

I can understand how a profile could be reassuring to someone who is colour blind. Although it is likely that their black and white work could be better than mine?

I created some color profiles for different situations and different cameras (D50 and D500) and ended up not using them. The results with these profiles where always worse compared to using the ON1 standard profiles. I’m mostly using “ON1 standard”, “ON1 portrait” for Portraits and “linear RAW” in some exceptional situations.
Creating your own profiles in my mind is overrated and not worth the effort.

I’ve worked with two different printers who offer Giclée printing services. Both of them photograph the X-Rite ColorChecker Passport with the artwork they are going to reproduce. It insures the colors of the original artwork are reproduced as faithfully as possible with just a couple of clicks.

Quite frankly, I used to spend time years ago creating custom color profiles though the profiles provided by the manufacturers are so good, it is difficult to eclipse them. Commercial profiles employ systems more complex than the simple X-rite color checker and in my experience, they are superior to any of those I can create with a simple system. It’s a fun exercise to engage in and full of wonderful learning opportunities.

In practice, one sunshiney day is pretty close to the next sunshiney day so there some room for being lazy. Cameras however, are different. Like monitors, each one has its own response to how it records the light so you should have separate profiles for each body.

Thank you.

Dumb follow-up question: Do I need to just create one profile for each camera or a profile for each camera in each shooting situation? Or one/more than one profile for each lens on each camera?

I know a lot about photography but I am a dunce when it comes to color. My thought was that I could create one profile for my D810 and then just use the color checker passport for all future portrait work (something that I don’t do very often). Then using the CCP frame created at the beginning of each shoot to set white balance after loading the camera profile ought to get me mighty close, yes?

It isn’t that hard once you’ve done it once or twice.

That’s exactly what I was looking for!

I’ll give it a whirl and see if I can figure it out. Being color blind I am a bit hampered when it comes to lighting and color calibration. I can usually get things pretty close with my landscape photography but I would really like to step up my game a bit when it comes to portraiture.

Very much appreciate your time!
