Thank you for such great questions. Off camera flash is nice outside but I wanted to focus on using natural light only for this course. You are also correct regarding HSS and the L-858D as it’s the only light meter that can read HSS. At times I use strobe and HSS on location but I have another course on lighting in studio and on location.

Speaking of locations, the temples, bamboo forest and red columns (tori gates) are all in Kyoto, Japan. The other locations are in Tokyo, Japan. In normal times, I shoot between New York, Los Angeles and Tokyo but since the pandemic, I’ve been in Japan.

In On1 2021 (which comes out in just a few days) you will be amazed with all you can do with cleaning up your portraits. You are covered there!

With the light meter, you do need to be aware of shutter speed, even when not using flash. You want to make a conscious decision about your shutter speed vs letting the camera determine it for you. It’s a key element to controlling the amount of motion you want in an image or when you want to freeze the action.

Again, I have another course focused on advanced studio lighting in studio and outside the studio with strobes. With the color checker, you can use it in ON1 to create your profile specific for your camera. The grey card can help you in terms of getting a neutral image but the color checker goes a step further with a custom profile for your camera. Very cool stuff.

Thanks again for all these great questions and I’m happy you are enjoying the course.

Always dream big,
Matthew

great course, nice teacher 🙂
I always use a off-camera flash outside to be sure having the right expo.

– where are these temple, bamboo forest, red columns sites located ?
– do we have access to masks in ON1 portrait to fine tune, if needed, the selection of lips, eyes,… and paint the shoulder to add some skin retouching to the arm skin too.
– i don’t understand how you are using your flashmeter. you seem to set the shutter speed to 1/250s if i undertood correctl (but you don’t need to take care about sync speed without flash) and iso and read the aperture at F/2.8. why don’t you set aperture to F/2.8 for the depth of field you need and read the shutter speed perhaps at 1/320sec or 1/2000sec ?
– do you sometimes use off-camera flash on site, hss or not (I think i recognized L-858D so, you should be able to measure hss) ?
– do you make other courses outside ON1 plus ?
– how do you take color checker into account in ON1. I am familiar with grey card, not with a color one

best regards
marc

My “walk around” lens is a 12 to 100 f4.0 and it works well, for me, for street photos and portraits. Should crop factor be included in your course in the “tools” section? Thanks

Matthew, are you based in Kyoto or were just passing by?

Best,

The topics are well presented and very clear, in a language clearly understandable. Understanding more about the Light helps to understand the triangle of Shutter Speed, Aperture, and Iso. I’m still looking for that balance, but this gives me a way to put it together as a foundation for learning.
